Moving out, Moving to Chicago

Currently I live in a small town in North Carolina. I've visted Chicago many times this year. I am very happy and excited to say that I will be moving to Chicago next week!!

I already have an apartment ready to go and I am in the process of getting everything I need to make a comfortable living. I have most of the things ready, except I am going to have to buy a bed when I get up there since I am driving my car up there. It is going to be about a 12 hour drive... I am not looking forward to the drive. I drove up once to Chicago before and back and it was very tiring.

I am 18 (turning 19 on september 29th) and I will be moving out of my house for the first time ever by myself. No more mom cooking dinner for me or me making a bunch of freezer food. I won't be able to eat as much as I used to till I get a job and have enough income coming in to do extra things, which that could take a while. I hope I can get settled in very soon, about a week or two is my goal, and then go out and find a job and start working often. (if anyone knows any places that are hiring, please tell me!)

I am very excited to move out, and I think I may be a litttle scared, not from living by myself  or anything, but because I have been too dependent on my mom for food and etc so I am going to need to learn how to cook, wash my clothes, etc.

And now with me living near Triton, I can go and take classes at the school instead of online! And I'll be able to be with my girlfriend, (from the other blog post).

Does anyone have any moving out experiences? What were your feelings at the time? How old were you when you moved out by yourself for the first time?
Please share!

  1. I am very happy for you to be taking such a big step. I wish you the best of luck!
I moved out when I was 14 years old. I didn't get a long with my mom and my middle sister. It was a bad situation because my middle sister and I would get into pyhsical fights. I moved in with my oldest sister and I used the child support money my dad gave me to pay for rent and food. I work teaching dance classes at my dance studio to pay for the extra stuff I needed. It was really tough, but it had made me a lot more mature and independent. I have had four places since then on my own and I love it. I like being able to walk around in my underwear and not have to worry about anyone complaining. A downside is that at times you do get lonely, but I'm sure with your girlfriend in the picture you won't have that problem.
Hope you find a job! I know there is a Costco opening up soon right by school. You should go online and apply. The pay starts off at eleven per hour.
    Good Luck

  2. Hi Jarrett,
By know you are here in the Windy city, Welcome! My family is from Ky and WV so this is quite a change for you compared to NC. You will like it here, but you will definatly get homesick fast. Different people.

As for a bed, Ikea in Schaumberg has inexpensive noce things. Regarding work, several search engines are likely to assist you such as indeed.com and careerbuilders.com.

UPS and Fed Ex are always hiring near the airport, you could check them out. On fullerton and 25th is a UPS. Some folks are hiring for seasonal help due to the holidays coming up. Lastly, try around the air port as their are many cargo places to apply.

    God Bless,
    Alice

  3. I came in US approximately two year ago from Europe. First I went to Dallas, Texas for one semester, and than I moved in Chicago. At first it was very difficult, it was not as I thought it is going to be when I moved in Dallas. It was a big change for me, coming from Europe. Everything was different in US starting from food, weather, lifestyle in general. I went on August in Dallas, and my main problems where hot weather and public transportation. Public Transportation in Dallas is terrible and I did not have a car. I had a friend in Chicago and I came to visit him. I liked Chicago and I decided to move here.

  4. Chicago has many opportunities for everyone. It is such a great place to live with all the cultural diversity. I have been on my own since I was 18. I love it and would not do anything differently. I went from a studio to a one bedroom. I love and appreciate my privacy.
